According to a study done by the United Nations (Check it out HERE), a grand total of 17% of all food available to consumers is thrown away. That study was a big part of what inspired me to take action, and it's a very comprehensive study of food waste, and what makes it such a big deal. I've included below some of the most important stats from that article and more, to share just how much food is wasted, and how much of it is preventable.

  • 32% of all food produced is wasted, equal to 1,500,000,000 tons of food

  • 690,000,000 people went hungry in 2019

  • 3,000,000,000 people could not afford healthy and nutritious food

  • 11% of food is discarded by households and individuals

  • 5% is wasted by food services and restaurants

  • 2% is lost at stores and retail outlets

  • 8% to 10% of greenhouse gas emissions are linked to uneaten food

That's a lot of food going down the drain! Fortunately, there's plenty of ways to reduce how much we waste. Check out some of our solutions to avoid getting more food than you need, and how to tell if your food is still okay to use before you throw it away. Feel free to share any solutions you may have with us, as well!
